Dog Boots for Yorkies & Yorkshire Terriers

Yorkies, officially known as Yorkshire Terriers, have tiny paws and slender legs that can make dog boots difficult to fit. The right lightweight boots can protect their paws from hot pavement, cold weather and rough surfaces while also providing indoor traction for senior Yorkies.

About the Yorkshire Terrier

Yorkshire Terriers may be tiny, but they have the confidence and personality of a much larger dog. Originally developed in England, Yorkies are energetic, affectionate and devoted companions. Their long, silky coats and small size make them instantly recognizable.

Most Yorkies weigh around seven pounds, although many family pets are larger. Paw size can vary considerably even among dogs of similar weight, so breed and weight should only be used as a starting point when selecting dog boots.

Why Do Yorkies Need Dog Boots?

A Yorkshire Terrier's small paws still need protection from uncomfortable walking surfaces. Dog boots can be helpful for:

  • Hot pavement: Small paws can be exposed to hot sidewalks, asphalt, patios and sand during warm-weather walks.
  • Cold weather: Boots provide a barrier from freezing pavement, snow, ice and road salt.
  • Indoor traction: Lightweight boots can provide grip on hardwood, tile and laminate floors.
  • Senior mobility: Older Yorkies may need additional traction as they develop stiffness, weakness or vision problems.
  • Paw protection: Boots can help cover sensitive paws and reduce direct contact with grass, rough ground and outdoor irritants.
  • Keeping paws cleaner: Boots help keep long paw hair away from mud, moisture and debris.

The best boots for Yorkies are lightweight, flexible and available in measurements small enough for tiny paws. Always compare your dog's paw length and width with the size chart for the individual product.

Dog Boots for Senior Yorkies

Senior Yorkshire Terriers may become less steady on smooth floors because of stiffness, muscle weakness, reduced vision or changes in coordination. A lightweight, flexible boot can provide traction without adding unnecessary weight to a small paw.

Max, my senior Yorkie shown below, wore soft boots indoors. The extra grip helped him walk more confidently after vestibular disease and continued helping as he became older and lost much of his vision.

How to Fit Boots on a Yorkie

Yorkies can be difficult to fit because their paws are tiny and their legs are slender. Lightweight, flexible boots with adjustable closures are usually the easiest styles to fit securely.

To measure your Yorkie's paws, have your dog stand on a sheet of paper. Mark the front of the longest toenail and the back of the paw for length, then mark the widest points for width. Measure between the marks and compare both measurements with the product's size chart. Avoid tracing the paw because this often overestimates its size.
